What's up Doc????
Hello Beach Walkers.
Weather tells me "Mostly cloudy with little rain". Should I bring my umbrella? I hope to see you tomorrow at the GumBoot. There will be good food and drink. And maybe some stimulating conversation.

Good afternoon Beach Walkers. I left out an image I was going to add to last weeks email. A couple of weeks ago we went to Home Site Creek falls. We walked there last year and the taps in my house had more water coming out then the falls did last summer. So after all the rain we have been having the falls were much more spectacular. If our elected leaders could only figure out a way to save some of that water for the summer.
I have mentioned before that my dad built me a pedal car. I have found a picture of that car. The driver, me, is hiding behind the dash. The two ladies with me in the picture are my cousins, Joke and Florie. Strange Dutch names, right? The original was in black and white, I think it looks better in colour.
And the obligatory eagle. It was a windy day in Sechelt when I took this image.
The transfer switch for my home battery backup has arrived. Now the search is on for an electrician to connect the switch. I am sure I can do it myself but if I want to try and get a rebate from the government I think it best to have a licensed electrician do the job. I will mount the box in the wall and the electrician can do the wiring. Then with luck no more darkness when the power goes out.
I went on the roof over the garage to fix the down spout that was bent and spraying water at the corner of the roof. This let water into the walls and showed up in the basement. I redirected the water spout and with luck that will solve the problem. I had originally thought that the down spout was not properly fastened, but I now think that the snow pushed and twisted the down spout so it sprayed water under the flashing. Lets just hope I fixed it. The roof is very slippery on that spot. I had to hang onto the railing above to keep from sliding off. I am getting too old for this stuff.
Got a notice from BC Hydro about all the great things they are doing. I am subscribed because I have an EV. They are trying to get me to use their charging stations. The email I got today was to tell me they are going to increase the cost of charging at their chargers. So what they are doing is making sure I use my home charging. I will put the rates down below this.
Type of charge Price (before tax)
Level 2 charging $0.2972 per kWh (no idle fee)
Fast charging (labelled 25 kW or higher) $0.3609 per kWh
Idle fee $0.40 per minute
So what are the chances the I will use their chargers? None, unless I have to, like when I am far away from home. Level 2 charging is what I have at home. Because I changed my rate structure it costs me 7.63 cents per Kilowatt when I charge between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. That is a far cry from their charge of 29.72 cents. Fast charging at a Tesla station costs me about 29 cents per Kilowatt and it is faster then BC Hydro. Fast charging at BC Hydro is 36.09 cents per Kilowatt. Good news is that they are putting some NACS connectors at some chargers. NACS is what Tesla's use.
So ultimately my idea is to use my solar panels to charge the home back up and use that during the peak hours when electricity cost is high.

How time-of-day pricing works
On time-of-day pricing, we apply a discount of 5 cents per kWh to all electricity that was used overnight (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.) and a surcharge of 5 cents per kWh to all electricity that was used during the on-peak period (4 to 9 p.m.).
No discount or surcharge is applied during the other hours of the day.
I have some trouble finding out what the basic rate is. According to the BC Hydro web site the basic charge is 12.63 cents per Kilowatt. Off-peak you get no discount. On-peak will get you a 5 cent surcharge. It looks like 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm is the same as off-peak so it should be 12.63 cents per Kilowatt. And just to throw a monkey wrench into all of this according to the BC Hydro web site the cost of electricity is going up by 3.75 %. I guess too many people are charging their cars at night to they have to increase the overall rate by 3.75 %. At any rate my charge for my car should cost me 12.63 cents minus 5 cents equals 7.63 cents per Kilowatt. I will let you figure out the increase of 3.75 % yourselves. My brain is starting to hurt. And as a final comment, you do know that we, as British Columbians, own all the power generating and transmission facilities.
